Asthma is achronic illness that is often experienced differently by children
depending on how well their symptoms are managed.
Why it Matters: In the United States, about 4.8 million children under
the age of 18 are estimated to have asthma, a disease of the lungs. That is
one in every 15 kids! St. Joseph Mercy Hospital is offering a variety of educational
programs for children with asthma.
RN Assessment Visits
One hour session with a certified asthma educator RN who will assess your individual
family needs and facilitate an educational plan in collaboration with your provider.
Parent/Child/Caregiver Classes
Asthma 101: Effective strategies to manage your child’s asthma (ages 8-12).
The ABC’s of Asthma (pre-school-3rd
grade)
Smoking Cessation Presentations
Classroom and group hands-on presentations on smoking and its effects on the
body.
Asthma Camp
Summer day camp for asthmatic students grades 2-5 in collaboration with the
Health Exploration Station in Canton. Campers engage in fun activities that
teach self-management skills to improve control of asthma symptoms.
Speakers Bureau
Group presentations available for classrooms, educators, parents, office professionals,
health care professionals, teachers, coaches on:
- Smoking prevention
- Hand washing
- Stress management
- Friends, Family child/infant CPR
- Asthma exercise
