Gastrointestinal Cancers
Physicians from other tertiary health centers and cancer care facilities refer
patients to SJMHS for digestive diseases and gastrointestinal cancers including:
- Colorectal
- Esophageal
- Pancreatic
- Gastric
- Hepatobiliary
- Anal
SJMHS offers convenient, patient-centered care and world-class cancer diagnosis
and treatments. We have one of America’s largest, advanced biliary groups
with gastrointestinal specialists who have the highest level of academic training.
Endoscopy
SJMHS physicians are specially-trained in advanced endoscopy and the treatment
of pain for biliary cancers and are proficient in a number of complex endoscopic
procedures not widely available.
Advanced endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) is used in
the treatment of pancreatic and biliary malignancies, complex bile duct stones
and leaks of the bile and pancreatic ducts.
Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS), the standard of care for the staging of many
gastrointestinal cancers. Our physicians are among the most experienced in the
Midwest in performing EUS guided celiac plexus neurolysis, used in the palliation
of pancreatic cancer pain.
Pancreatic pseudocyst drainage using endoscopic ultrasound and drainage, a
safe and effective first option in treating symptomatic pseudocysts before open
surgery.
Endoscopic mucosal resection used successfully in the treatment of early-stage
tumors of the esophagus, stomach, duodenum and colon.
Because SJMHS specializes in cancers of the colon and rectum, pancreas and
bile duct, we receive a high volume of referrals.
Laparoscopic Colectomy Surgery
SJMHS surgeons have played a principle role in using laparoscopic instruments
to perform colectomies. Gastrointestinal surgeons played an important role nationally
in establishing the use of laparoscopic colectomies.
- Eliminates the need for a large incision
- Minimizes post-operative complications
- Shortens recovery time and reduces length of stay in the hospital
Our team of board certified colorectal surgeons participated in a national
clinical trial that proved laparoscopically-assisted surgery for colon cancer
is equally effective as standard, open colectomy in terms of tumor recurrence
and patient survival.
Liver and Pancreatic Resections
Our surgical team is experienced in complex liver and pancreatic procedures.
We perform a high volume of liver and pancreatic resections and radiofrequency
ablation of tumors that are not resectable. SJMHS has a dedicated surgical support
team for these procedures.
