 Michigan Heart & Vascular Institute (MHVI) of Saint Joseph Mercy Health System has, from its inception, considered clinical research to be a fundamental component of its mission. MHVI investigators have made significant contributions to many national and international research studies in the areas of acute coronary syndromes, heart failure, interventional cardiology and electrophysiology. MHVI research has included major NIH-supported studies, multi-centered controlled trials, often from academic research consortia, device industry- derived studies and research developed by MHVI physician investigators.
Some highlights of current research includes the following studies:
- Embolic protection devices placed during interventions that protect the arteries and grafts from potential clot-related complications
- Several Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy (CRT) and implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICD) trials; including the study of tissue Doppler parameters
- New drugs to improve quality of life for patients with heart failure
- New drugs to improve the outcomes of patients with acute coronary syndromes
On the horizon, other studies include:
- Two studies of new drug-coated stents
- Two studies of newer anti-thrombotic agents
- Evaluation of a drug to slow atherosclerosis
- The effect of CRT devices on sleep apnea
MHVI investigators have either started or completed over 30 research studies over the last five years. The philosophy of MHVI is that research should either substantively contribute to the furthering of our understanding of cardiovascular disease or facilitate our patients’ access to state-of-the-art cardiovascular medicine and technology.
