Minimally Invasive Surgery

Saint Joseph Mercy Health System offers the latest techniques and technology in minimally invasive surgery, including laparoscopic and robotic surgery. Instrument holders (trocars) are passed through small incisions. A high definition video camera is placed through one instrument holder, while specialized surgical instruments are passed through the others. The video camera projects a view of the operative site onto video monitors in the operating room. The surgeon manipulates these instruments to perform the operation through these small incisions. With robotic surgery, the instrument holders are attached to the da Vinci® robot and specialized robotic instruments are passed through the holders. The robotic video camera projects a stereoscopic high definition 3D image, allowing the surgeon to see great detail. In addition, the robotic instruments have great flexibility, allowing the surgeon to use fine, delicate human wristed movements not possible with other forms of minimally invasive surgery.

Traditional surgery for many problems, including gallstones, endometriosis, diverticulitis, and cancer, usually requires a long, deep incision and a lengthy recovery time. For many years, minimally invasive (and most recently robotic) techniques have been used as an alternative to traditional “open” surgery. Patients undergoing laparoscopic and robotic surgery have smaller incisions and therefore may realize reduced post-operative pain, less need for narcotic medications, quicker return of bowel function, shorter hospital stays, a quicker return to daily activities, and less scarring.
