The St. Joseph Mercy Cancer Care Program is one of only 50 Clinical Community Oncology Programs (CCOP) in the United States designated by the National Cancer Institute (NCI). This prestigious designation means patients who are referred to us will have access to the latest treatments and preventions for cancer through NCI-sponsored clinical research trials including studies at Mayo Clinic and MD Anderson, as well as access to innovative therapies from pharmaceutical companies.
Since the inception of the NCI in 1993, we have received nearly $15 million in grant support from the NCI. Annually, we place more than 500 patients in clinical trials and have developed one of the premier community research programs in the country.
In addition, we are one of only two community cancer programs in the country participating with the National Comprehensive Cancer Network evaluating compliance with guidelines for breast cancer treatment or diagnosis. This innovative study has attracted great interest from payers as a way of assuring high quality cancer care.
Areas of active investigation include:
- The evaluation of novel targeting agents used in combination with and without chemotherapy that may prove to be active in a wide range of cancer treatments without the typical side effects of traditional chemotherapy
- Screening and prevention trials, such as a multi-target DNA-based assay panel (MTAP) that has the potential to diagnose and treat the cancer at an early stage in areas of the gastrointestinal tract because it identifies abnormal cells in the stool and blood
- Genomic profiling to tailor therapies for patients at high risk for the recurrence of breast cancer
This is an exciting time for the Oncology Program because we will soon bring the benefits of research closer to patients with cancer in Livingston County with the new Cancer Center at St. Joseph Mercy Brighton. Together, our programs based in Washtenaw and Livingston Counties will allow us to provide our patients the most current treatment modalities and with the most important resources of all – hope.
