The Department of Pathology is actively involved in research on several fronts. Members of the department collaborate with clinical investigators to morphologically characterize skin, breast and urological conditions. There is an active program evaluating laboratory tests for the diagnosis of immunologic diseases. In addition, members of the department are involved in developing national quality indicators for pre-analytic and post-analytic laboratory processes, such as patient identification, order accuracy, turnaround time and result communication.
Together, department members have published more than 100 research investigations in peer-reviewed journals and edited or authored several books. Funding for research has been obtained from industry and the National Institutes of Health, and department members are currently participating in a collaborative study on quality benchmarking funded by the Centers for Disease Control.
