Program Directors

Our Program Directors are as follows:

Dr. John Hopper attended Medical School at Wayne State University and completed his residency in Combined Internal Medicine and Pediatrics at the University of North Carolina, where he served as Co-Chief Resident in Pediatrics. Dr. Hopper was on the full-time faculty at Wayne State for 11 years and served as the Associate Program Director for the Med-Peds Residency. From 2005 to 2008, he was the Chief Medical Officer at Brighton Hospital where he established and led the Addiction Medicine Fellowship. His research experience includes clinical trials for smoking cessation and heroin dependence. In addition to his many clinical and teaching awards, Dr. Hopper is an author for UpToDate® and serves on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Opioid Management.

Dr. Corey Dean, Associate Program Director, attended medical school at Michigan State University College of Human Medicine, graduating in 1999. Following medical school, he completed his combined Internal Medicine/Pediatrics residency program at Baystate Medical Center, Tufts University Western Campus in Springfield, Massachusetts. After residency, Dr. Dean returned to the state of Michigan where he completed a 1 year primary care sports medicine fellowship at Michigan State University. Dr. Dean's special interests are community based sports medicine, office based procedural skills, adolescent medicine, graduate medical education, and health care for the underserved. He has extensive experience in ambulatory and community based medicine in the greater Ann Arbor area. DeanCorey.jpg
Dr. Patricia McNally Associate Program Director, went to medical school at Michigan State University's College of Human Medicine, graduating in 1999. She then went on to do a Combined Internal Medicine and Pediatrics residency at the University of Michigan and St. Joseph Mercy Hospital. After residency, she spent one year as an internal medicine chief resident at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital, where she developed her interest in teaching. She then stayed on as a Core Faculty teacher, and is currently an Associate Program Director. Dr. Richard Shellenberger Associate Program Director, graduated from Michigan State University in 1989 college of Osteopathic Medicine. He completed a transitional internship at Flint Osteopathic Hospital followed by an Internal Medicine residency at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital, where he was Chief Medical Resident in 1993-94. Dr. Shellenberger became an Academic Faculty member in July, 1994. He has been the deserving recipient of multiple teaching awards. His interests include primary care internal medicine, community health, physical diagnosis, and occupational medicine. He has extensive experience and expertise in both inpatient and outpatient medicine, and is a model “Clinician-Educator”. Dr. Richard Shellenberger
Dr. Anupam Suneja, Associate Program Director, completed his medical education at the University of Delhi, graduating in 1991.  He then completed an Internal Medicine residency, and chief residency at Flushing Hospital Medical Center in New York, followed by a Fellowship in Geriatrics and Masters in Public Health at Boston University.  He served as a faculty member at Boston University, and Associate Program Director for Internal Medicine residency program at Wayne State University.  He is widely interested in promoting resident research and graduate medical education.
