Research Ethics

Along with the usual questions associated with Institutional Review Board (IRB) review, the Medical Ethics Committee of Saint Joseph Mercy Health System will review research conduct to ensure that it is consistent with the mission and values of the organization.

When considering research at Saint Joseph Mercy Health System, the IRB and Medical Ethics Committee will evaluate whether or not the proposed research poses any issues associated with the Catholic identity of the organization. It will determine if the research is consistent with the Ethical and Religious Directives for Catholic Health Care Services.

The proposed research must also follow the Ethical Norms of Research on Human Subjects, in that the knowledge sought through research must be important and obtainable by no other means, and qualified people must carry on the research; appropriate pre-clinical experimentation must precede human experimentation; the risk of suffering or injury must be proportionate to the good to be gained; subjects should be selected so that risks and benefits will not fall unequally on one group in society, and to protect the integrity of the human person, free and informed (voluntary) consent must be obtained.
