Volunteer Opportunities

Saint Joseph Mercy Health System Volunteer Services program offers a variety of opportunities to make a difference in the lives of our patients and families during regular business hours, evenings and weekends. Last year more than 600 people volunteered with well over 40,000 hours of service. Volunteering is a gift to our patients and our health care system. Patients and their families get to experience first-hand the personal touch our volunteers provide. At St. Joe’s we pride ourselves on the great teamwork, dedication and remarkable care our volunteers share with us. Please review the sample list of volunteer opportunities. Are you ready to volunteer? To join our teams of volunteers please apply online through the adult, college or teen program.

If you are great with the public and love meeting new people, St. Joe’s is the perfect place to greet our patients, staff and visitors. When entering the hospital the first thing people see are the friendly faces of our staff and volunteers. This volunteer position requires great customer service and provides directions and information, as well as connects guests with a shuttle, bus or taxi service. The volunteer will also answer phones as well as any other miscellaneous tasks. Ability to interact with the public in a friendly manner giving each visitor a remarkable experience is a must.

We are in need of volunteers to aid in our Patient care Team. If you are friendly, caring and compassionate this opportunity may be for you. This position will assist the nursing staff with tasks so that they can devote more time to direct patient care. Duties could include stocking supplies, visiting and providing comfort to patients, escorting families to patient rooms, assist with discharge activities, and numerous other special projects. This position requires self-starter individuals with the ability to work with detailed information and enjoy a physically active role.

Volunteers deliver donated reading materials as well as read and visit with patients at the bedside. Interaction between patient and volunteers lifts the spirit and provides respite from the stresses of hospitalization that is a wonderful gift to our patients.  If you possess a great personality and have a desire to make others smile, volunteering for the book cart may be just what you are looking for. Duties include; restocking the waiting areas, keeping the cart well stocked with books and magazines, keeping the storage area cleaned and organized. Stamina is a must for pushing the cart and walking long distances throughout the hospital. Thanks to the dedication of our volunteers and the generosity of our book donors the book cart has provided 2,200 books and magazines to patients yearly.

Our bundle of love volunteers put so much love into sewing, knitting or crocheting for our patients her at St. Joe’s. From baby hats and blankets to lap robes and walker bags, these are just some of the items that our talented volunteers make in their homes for the comfort of our patients.

Volunteers who have been affected by heart disease offer cardiac patients comfort, compassion and support during their hospital stay. Volunteers with firsthand experience can relate to what our patients are going through before and after surgery and put them at ease and to answer any questions. It is rewarding for both the volunteer as well as the patient. Contact the SJMHS volunteer office as well as Mended Hearts, for more information.
