Grand Opening: St. Joseph Mercy Center for Advanced Medicine and Surgery
Start Date

Tours, prizes and refreshments planned to introduce new facility to the community

The new lobby at CantonCANTON, Mich. – Saint Joseph Mercy Health System (SJMHS) is set to open the Center for Advanced Medicine and Surgery at St. Joseph Mercy Canton Health Center located at 1600 S. Canton Center Road in December. Opening of the new addition makes SJMHS the largest health care provider in Canton and offers the first radiation therapy services in the community for area residents.

The 53,600 square-foot facility will offer state-of-the-art technology and services in the following areas: imaging services, including digital mammography, Canton’s only fixed MRI and a 64 – slice CT scanner; surgical services, including minimally invasive surgery suites and universal procedure rooms; and cancer care, including a chemotherapy infusion center, healing garden and radiation oncology services featuring a CT simulator and RapidArc linear accelerator.

“We are thrilled to bring advanced and life-changing technologies to the Canton area. Much thought has been put into every detail of the facility – from the services offered, to the soothing artwork and paint scheme, to the unique designs of treatment rooms,” says Kathy Kasperek-Korelis, director of oncology for Saint Joseph Mercy Health System and project leader for the Center for Advanced Medicine and Surgery. “We have created a healing environment within a high-tech building.”

One of the most advanced pieces of technology at the Center is the RapidArc linear accelerator. It is the only one of its kind in southeast Michigan and only the second in the state. The RapidArc provides the latest in radiation oncology treatments by delivering tumor-destroying radiation with remarkable precision in an outpatient setting. It treats the entire tumor with pinpoint accuracy and is easier on the patient, who does not have to hold still for long periods of time. In most cases one treatment lasts less than two minutes with the linear accelerator making a full rotation around the patient.

“The Center for Advanced Medicine and Surgery will allow people in Canton and surrounding communities to receive advanced care right in their own back yards,” says Rob Casalou, president and CEO, St. Joseph Mercy Ann Arbor, Livingston and Saline hospitals. “At St. Joe’s, we are dedicated to healing body, mind and spirit; the Center for Advanced Medicine and Surgery goes a long way to support our mission. We encourage the community to join us for our grand opening celebration.”

The grand opening will be held on Nov. 22 from 2 – 4 p.m., which will be complete with light refreshments, tours and giveaways. Members of the community are invited and encouraged to attend.
