Saint Joseph Mercy Health System (SJMHS) is pleased to announce Bob Smythe as the new chief operating officer (COO) for St. Joseph Mercy Ann Arbor, Livingston and Saline.
Smythe is not new to the health system; he was a consultant on the executive team in spring 2011.
“During Bob’s six-month tenure with us last fiscal year, we were able to strengthen our processes to monitor and improve our financial performance as well as develop our budget for this fiscal year,” says Rob Casalou, president and CEO, St. Joseph Mercy Hospitals.
Smythe assumed the role of COO on October 17, 2011.
Smythe’s career experience is extensive: Most recently, he was vice president for provider network operations at Health Alliance Plan (HAP). Prior to that, he served as the senior staff advisor at the Detroit Medical Center, where he provided coaching to executive staff and nursing management at Sinai Grace Hospital and held the position of vice president and COO of Sinai-Grace Hospital. He was the COO of Henry Ford Wyandotte Hospital, regional administrator for Henry Ford Medical Group, vice president of health and medical affairs at HAP, executive director at Metro Medical Group and associate administrator at Hutzel Hospital.
Smythe graduated with a Bachelor of Science in education from Wayne State University and earned a master’s degree in public health from the University of Michigan.
“Smythe has extensive operations experience over a distinguished 30-year career,” said Casalou. “His business and operations acumen are an invaluable resource to our organization. I am thrilled to welcome him back to St. Joe’s.”
