St. Joseph Mercy Ann Arbor Celebrates 100 years and a One-Million-Dollar Event

This year, St. Joseph Mercy Ann Arbor is celebrating two monumental achievements – reaching the Hospital’s 100th anniversary and surpassing the St. Joe’s Holiday Ball fund-raising goal of $1 million. Led by Chair Julie Beer with Ticket & Philanthropy Co-chairs Rod Beer, MD, and Charlie Crone, this year’s Holiday Ball is the first in the event’s history to receive support totaling more than $1 million.

Centennial Sponsor Anesthesia Associates of Ann Arbor made a gift of $100,000, leading the way for the many other sponsors who made their best gifts to date in support of the 2011 event.

“The generosity of our sponsors and dedication of our Holiday Ball volunteers never ceases to amaze me,” said Camille Shy, Vice President for Development, Saint Joseph Mercy Health System. “We are absolutely thrilled to have reached our $1 million goal, but moreover, we are thankful to those who made it possible by serving as champions for St. Joe’s through their generosity and commitment.”

Dr. Beer says it did not take much effort for his partners at Anesthesia Associates of Ann Arbor to jump on board in support of St. Joe’s Holiday Ball.

“I sent one email to my colleagues asking if they would commit to securing the Centennial Anniversary sponsorship level, and the resounding answer was ‘yes.’ Within minutes I had a response in support of this effort. I was overwhelmed,” recalls Beer.

The sold-out Holiday Ball with the theme, The Black & White Ball, The Party for St. Joe’s Century, will take place on December 3 at Eastern Michigan University Convocation Center. This year’s event will host more than 950 leaders and friends from the community, local businesses, physician practices and Saint Joseph Mercy Health System. Gifts will support the construction of the new Outpatient Surgery Center on the Hospital’s campus.

“I am truly humbled and delighted by the support for this year’s Holiday Ball,” said Julie Beer, 2011 St. Joe’s Holiday Ball Chair. “It warms my heart to imagine how the event will benefit patients and families. For so many, the Holiday Ball is our way to give back to St. Joe’s for all that the Hospital and the wonderful doctors and staff do for our community.”

This is the 36th annual St. Joe’s Holiday Ball, which counts its five most financially successful years between 2007 and 2011 at a time when philanthropic giving has decreased both locally and nationally due to the economic recession. Since beginning in 1976, the event has raised $15.5 million and supported vital health services and capital projects throughout St. Joseph Mercy Hospital. Major construction projects on St. Joe’s campus that have benefited from the event include the Robert H. and Judy Dow Alexander Cancer Center, the Towsley Senior Health Building and the Ellen Thompson Women’s Health Center as well as the Hospital’s Emergency Center, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, the Helen and Marion S. DeWeese, MD, Surgery Pavilion and the new Patient Towers.

“We are grateful for the incredible support for the Holiday Ball and for the community’s century-long trust in our hospital. St. Joe’s ability to inspire unprecedented gifts during the uncertainty of the slow economic recovery is a testament to the important role that St. Joe’s plays in our community, the impact we have had on millions of lives and the difference we will continue to make,” said Rob Casalou, President and CEO of St. Joseph Mercy Ann Arbor, Saline and Livingston.

Other lead sponsors to the event include: Diamond Sponsors ($50,000-74,999), Huron Valley Radiology, P.C., Dr. & Mrs. Stanley R. Strasius and Michigan Multispecialty Physicians; Platinum Sponsors ($25,000-49,999) Dr. & Mrs. Roderick W. Beer, IHA, McKinley, Inc. / Ambassador Ronald N. & Eileen Weiser / Albert M. & Paula Berriz, and Victory Honda; and Gold Sponsors ($10,000-24,999) Ann Arbor Spine Center and Neuroscience, Associates in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, P.C., Center for Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, Gene Butman Ford, Glacier Hills Care & Rehabilitation Center, Huron Gastro / Center for Digestive Care, Huron River Radiation Oncology Specialists, Richard Isackson & Suzette Bouchard-Isackson, Michigan Heart, Michigan Otolaryngology Surgery Associates, Tom O'Keefe & Family, Dick & Norma Sarns, and Dr. & Mrs. Ernie Sorini.
