St. Joseph Mercy Ann Arbor receives Triple 3 Star rating for cardiac surgery from the Society of Thoracic Surgeons

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – (Dec. 13, 2013) – St. Joseph Mercy Ann Arbor received a Triple 3 Star rating-- the highest rating possible--for cardiac surgery from the Society of Thoracic Surgeons. St. Joseph Mercy Ann Arbor is considered to be in the top 23 programs in the country based on these quality ratings from the Society of Thoracic Surgeons.

The Triple 3 Star rating includes all composite quality categories including Coronary Artery Bypass Graft, Aortic Valve Replacement and Coronary Artery Bypass + Aortic Valve Replacement procedures.

The Society of Thoracic Surgeons has developed a comprehensive rating system designating the quality of cardiac surgery among hospitals across the country. Information was retrieved from 998 participating hospitals nationwide. Only 23 of the 998 hospitals nationally received the Triple 3 Star rating, which denotes the highest category of quality based on data from July 1, 2010 through June 30, 2013.

"Cardiac surgery is highly scrutinized as a specialty, and we welcome this kind of intense review from our profession," said Manak Sood, MD, section head of cardiothoracic surgery at St. Joseph Mercy Ann Arbor. "This data shows that we are in the top one to two percent of all cardiac programs in the country."
