Start summer off right with free Healthy Kick-Off Event
St. Joe’s teams with IHA and Canton Leisure Services to host family-friendly health event
CANTON, Mich. – (April 17, 2014) – Saint Joseph Mercy Health System (SJMHS) is pleased to partner with IHA, Canton Leisure Services, 88.1 The Park and the Canton Observer to offer the third annual Healthy Summer Kick-Off on Saturday, May 3, 2014 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
"As the largest health care provider in Canton, we're committed to helping the community kick off their summer activities in a fun and healthy environment," said Kathy Kasperek-Korelis, executive director of ambulatory services at SJMHS.
Join TV health personality Lila Lazarus for this interactive, family-friendly event being held at St. Joseph Mercy Canton, located at 1600 S. Canton Center Road. 88.1 The Park will be on hand with music, games and prizes. Free yoga sessions will be taking place throughout the day, courtesy of The Summit, as well as free chair massages from Indigo Salon, Spa & Boutique of Canton's Cherry Hill Village. Register to win Tigers baseball tickets, a three-month pass to The Summit, and an iPad mini.
Free children's bike helmets and fittings will be given out starting at noon to the first 200 kids in attendance, courtesy of IHA. IHA pediatricians and family medicine physicians will provide mini fitness checks to kids.
St. Joseph Mercy Canton will be offering a number of free health screenings including blood pressure testing, body mass index and skin cancer screenings—which is timely as May is National Skin Cancer Awareness Month.
"With the weather warming up, people will be starting to get out more in the sun and skin cancer concerns will be more important than ever," said Ann LaFond, M.D., a dermatologist at SJMHS.
The popular Health Exploration Station at St. Joseph Mercy Canton will be open for tours and play; and the Urgent Care will host a teddy bear clinic, so don’t forget to bring your favorite stuffed animal to be mended.
Arctic Edge will be on hand with pick-up hockey activities and information on hockey safety.
St. Joe’s “Farmer Dan” will be handing out seedlings and information about The Farm at St. Joe’s housed at St. Joseph Mercy Ann Arbor – the only hospital-based farm in the country.
Refreshments will be provided and all activities are free.
At Summit on the Park, located at 46000 Summit Parkway in Canton, the pool will be open at no cost from 1:30 – 5:30 p.m. to participants of the event, featuring its ever-popular lazy river.
"One of our department priorities is to promote an active and healthy community," said Canton Leisure Services director Debbie Bilbrey-Honsowetz. "This terrific partnership with St. Joseph Mercy Canton provides an opportunity for families to take advantage of some wonderful health initiatives right in their own backyard."
A 5K Wellness Walk and Fun Run to promote wellness will also take place, emceed by Lila Lazarus. Start time is 10:30 am. Cost for the 5K is $15 adults, $10 for those 12 and under and includes a t-shirt. Registration is required at www.stjoeshealth.org/sjmhs5k or at the day of the event.
