ANN ARBOR, Mich. – (July 7, 2014) –St. Joseph Mercy Ann Arbor was named one of the top 15 hospitals in the country in Consumer Reports first-ever rating of hospitals in heart surgery.

More than 400 hospitals were rated in 45 states plus Washington, D.C. and Puerto Rico based on data for two heart surgeries: surgical aortic valve replacement and coronary artery bypass graft surgery, an operation done to treat blocked coronary arteries. The ratings include data from patients’ medical records showing whether patients survived the procedure and how they fared on other important measures, including complications. Information comes from the Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS), which has collected the data for several decades. More than 1,000 U.S. hospitals report to the STS, but only about 400 allowed the organization to share the data with Consumer Reports.

"This recognition from a highly-regarded publication relied on by consumers is another affirmation of the top-notch care our entire surgical team provides every day," said Manak Sood, MD, section head of cardiothoracic surgery at St. Joseph Mercy Ann Arbor. "We are often referred some of the most complicated heart surgery cases in the state, and we are very proud of the high quality care and results we provide our patients."

The cardiothoracic surgery department at St. Joseph Mercy Ann Arbor recently received a Triple 3 Star rating-- the highest rating possible--for cardiac surgery from the Society of Thoracic Surgeons. Surgeons at St. Joseph Mercy Ann Arbor perform approximately 15 open heart surgeries a week.

Consumer Reports has also given high marks to St. Joseph Mercy Ann Arbor on overall patient outcomes, patient experience and hospital practice, ranking the hospital on a level comparable to Cleveland Clinic in those areas.

Only 15 hospitals in the Consumer Reports ratings earned top marks in heart-valve and bypass surgeries (listed alphabetically):
