The Colorectal Division of the General Surgery Department at SJMHS collaborates closely with the Enterostomal Therapy Nursing Team. These nurses are certified in the specialty of Ostomy Care by the Wound, Ostomy and Continence Nursing Society (WOCN) . Ostomy Nurses educate, assist, and support patients and families prior to surgery, during hospitalization, and after discharge from the hospital. Before surgery, the Ostomy Nurse can discuss your concerns, explain the changes that will occur with the surgery, and prepare you for ostomy care after surgery. If your surgeon requests, the location of the stoma (surgically created bowel opening also called ostomy) can be selected on your abdomen. This may not always be possible. After surgery, you will see an Ostomy Nurse in the hospital. In coordination with the staff nurses, you will receive instructions in the care of your ostomy and in adjusting to surgery. Follow up care for any ostomy concerns arising after you are home can be addressed by your Home Care Nurse or with an outpatient visit with your Ostomy Nurse at the hospital.

The Ostomy Nursing Team looks forward to providing you with the information and skills needed to successfully recover after surgery. Please contact us for more information about our role and services offered.
