Experience Advisor Program

At St. Joe's, it is our commitment to deliver patient-centered care by embracing patients and families as partners. We welcome you and value your input as we continuously improve the planning, delivery and evaluation of healthcare.

As such, we have created a variety of advisory roles, and we invite former patients, family members and the community (you!) to offer input and advice on various aspects of the patient experience. To become an Experience Advisor, please apply online.

Your participation in helping us improve patient care policies, processes, communication materials, the physical environment, quality improvement activities, and safety efforts, will have a direct impact on our patients' experiences while receiving care in the hospital, or at any of our facilities.

Based on your area of interest and/or expertise, we have the following volunteer opportunities and the related expectations:

Committee Member (minimum 1-year commitment required)

  • Represent the patient or family perspective
  • Be a hospital committee member and will attend regular meetings focused on activities to design or improve a new or current program, service, policy or process
  • Prep for meetings and review materials and/or providing feedback outside of meeting times
  • Work closely with different clinical and non-clinical staff
  • Communicate ideas in a clear and succinct manner
  • Service is voluntary, thus compensation is not provided.
  • Regular attendance and active participation is expected

Focus Group Participant (meets 1-2 times to cover a specific topic)

  • Provides feedback on your own personal healthcare experience as a patient or family member
  • Time investment is typically 1.5 to 2 hours
  • Required to sign confidentiality and photo release form
  • Service is voluntary, thus compensation is not provided

Communication Reviewer

  • Review and provide end user's perspective on draft brochures, patient education materials, websites, policies, newsletters, and marketing materials
  • Work will be done electronically and remotely
  • Time commitment varies
  • Able to respond quickly and meet deadlines as requested
  • Have access to email
  • Health screening is not required if all work is done remotely
  • Service is voluntary, thus compensation is not provided

Experience Sharing

  • Provides presentations to professional staff on their personal healthcare experience
    • Presentations may be given at new employee orientation, educational seminars for professionals, simulation trainings, or at department or committee meetings
  • Time commitment varies between 1-24 hours
  • Required to sign confidentiality form and photo release form
  • Service is voluntary, thus compensation is not provided

All applicable volunteer requirements will apply, such as formal application, health screening, background check, references, liability and confidentiality forms signed, and regular documentation of time spent.
